Are Instagram hashtags still relevant?
The answer is absolutely!
…and if you’re wondering what the heck are hashtags, well hashtags are how the right people find your content.
In this episode, I wanna share with you how to find the right Instagram hashtags for your content and how to avoid hurting your reach on Instagram with the wrong hashtag strategy.
So, let's dive in.

On top of that, I’ll also share some tips to avoid penalizing your content.
Before we begin, it’s important to take note the following:
You need to know WHO it is that you are trying to attract and appeal to on Instagram.
You will want to watch this episode where I talk about how to Attract Better Customers & Clients - Stop Confusing Your Audience.
This will allow you to identify the tribe that is best served with your products and services. Make sure you go through the exercise training in that resource.
It will be difficult for you to come up with an effective Instagram hashtag strategy, if you do not know WHO it is that you are trying to appeal to.
Make sure that the hashtags you use are relevant to your content and the audience you’re trying to attract.
This is going to be most important as if it's not relevant, it's not going to help you and it’s also going to hurt your Instagram algorithm.
Work smarter, not necessarily harder.
From there on, you can start to create a hashtag list on a spreadsheet or a Google sheet.
By doing this you can get ideas to springboard from.
On Instagram, click on the magnifying glass at the very bottom.
Start searching for keywords.
Think about who it is you’re trying to attract AND think about what it is that your content is about.
Example: You’re a realtor and you’re trying to attract more business and your posts are about real estate tips, home buying tips, or home selling tips.
- Type in the keyword “real estate tips”
- You’ll be able to see a list of top accounts that have that keyword
- Check on those and see what hashtags are being used
- You can also click on “see all results” to view tabs at the top for Top Accounts, Audio, Tags, Places etc.
Some of them may not be relevant but they are going to give you really good hashtag examples.
When finding hashtags that resonate with your brand, make sure to follow them. I recommend that you do follow hashtags that are MOST relevant to your brand.
Keep an eye out for Reels and posts that have hashtags that are perfect for your audience and content.
Select the relevant ones and put them in your list of hashtags you can use with your content on Instagram.
Using Irrelevant Hashtags
Again, if it's not relevant, it's not going to help you and it’s also going to hurt your Instagram algorithm.
Using Too Many Hashtags
You'll hear contradictory things when it comes to this but I personally say that three to five hashtags per post is optimal. However, I wouldn't go over 10. That would be my professional advice to you at least at this moment in time when I'm shooting this video.
Using the Same Group of Hashtags Over and Over
Instagram's algorithm can see how many times you're using that group of hashtags.
I would think twice on using the same group of hashtags for all your posts.
You have to make sure you mix it up a little bit and add variation or different combinations of hashtags on each content piece.
Pay Attention to Your Analytics
This is actually cool because you’ll see which posts and hashtags are bringing you the most followers or engagement.
You can actually see how your hashtags are working for you which is something very cool to pay attention to.

You don't have to do hashtag research every time you do a post.
I would spend about an hour doing hashtag research, create a list of hashtags that you can pull from every time you do a post.
So basically it's copy paste, copy paste.
Don’t forget to add variation and use a different group of hashtags on each post.
